A source close to the Iranian authorities had told that a Kurdish lawyer had been arrested and that he had defended an activist who had been sentenced to death.
Iranian authorities have arrested a Kurdish lawyer who has defended a kurdish nationalist activist who has been sentenced to death, a source said.
The source told Kurdistan24 who not to be named, that Niaz had planned to look into the case of his client Ramin Hussein Banahi as the only defender of the activist who was arrested earlier last year.
In January, the Sanandaj court sentenced Panahi to death on charges of fighting the state and based his conviction on a statement she said was a member of the Kurdish opposition.
In April the Supreme Court of Iran approved the verdict.
Niaz said in a previous interview with Kurdistan24 that his client is “innocent” and that his alleged crime is being a member of the Kurdish Komla Party of Kurdistan.
Kurdistan24 could not reach any Iranian official for comment.
International human rights organizations have already expressed serious concern over the sentence of the execution of Ramin Hossein Panahi and urged the Iranian authorities to repeal the sentence.
The United Nations had said the death sentence was “unacceptable” and called on the Iranian authorities to rescind the sentence.
According to Amnesty International, Iran executed 507 of the 993 people executed last year at the global level. Iran is one of the leading countries to carry out the death penalty globally.
